Perisher Ski Patrol has a history that dates back to 1968. It was established to provide first aid treatment to injured skiers. Since the acquisition of Bluecow & Guthega ski resorts, Perisher Blue resort is now the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, with over 50 lifts covering an area of 1250 hectares. Perisher Ski Patrol now covers four areas, Perisher, Smiggins, Bluecow, and Guthega.

The winter season starts early June and finishes mid October. In order to cover this area 32 full time and 150 volunteer patrollers are used. During busy periods 60 of these can be on duty at one time. The full time patrollers are employed by the Perisher Blue resort for the duration

of the season. The volunteer patrollers give their time free of charge and work on weekends and on their holidays, mid week. Ski patrolling is mainly about skiing and having fun. It gives people the opportunity to ski with good skiers who share a common interest. It offers skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to do more than just skiing on their holiday. Patrolling is enjoyable as a result of the satisfaction derived from helping or treating injured skiers, being the first skier on the slope after the powder has fallen, or skiing with friends.
Perisher Ski Patrol is a volunteer organisation and relies heavily on peoples generosity to survive. Money is raised through the patrol’s annual raffle, which offers prizes such as overseas trips, and donations made by the resort, ski lodges and many skiers and boarders.
