Perisher Ski Patrol formally started its operations
in 1968. It was established to provide first aid
treatment to injured skiers. With the acquisition of
Bluecow & Guthega ski resorts, the combined Perisher
Resort is now the largest ski resort in the southern
hemisphere, with over 50 lifts covering an area of
1250 hectares. Perisher Ski Patrol covers four
zones: Perisher, Smiggins, Bluecow, and Guthega.
The winter season starts in early June and finishes in mid October. In order to cover this large area, 30 full time patrollers and over 150 volunteer patrollers work to ensure the safety of guests. During busy periods, 60 of these can be on duty at one time. The full time patrollers are employed by the Perisher Resort for the duration of the season. The volunteer patrollers give their time free of charge and work on weekends and on their holidays to provide mid-week coverage.
Ski patrolling is more than just skiing and having fun. It gives people the opportunity to ski and board with people who share a common interest. It offers skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to do more than just ski on their holiday. Patrolling is enjoyable as a result of the satisfaction derived from helping injured skiers, being the first
